{"id":4929,"date":"2025-02-14T10:38:05","date_gmt":"2025-02-14T09:38:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/synccapitalng.com\/home\/?p=4929"},"modified":"2025-02-14T10:38:05","modified_gmt":"2025-02-14T09:38:05","slug":"new-atm-transaction-fees-begin-march-1-says-cbn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/synccapitalng.com\/home\/media\/new-atm-transaction-fees-begin-march-1-says-cbn\/","title":{"rendered":"New ATM transaction fees begin March 1, says CBN"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbn.gov.ng\/\">Central Bank of Nigeria<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>(CBN) has reviewed upwards the fees charged on Automated Teller Machine (ATM) withdrawals effective March 1.<\/p>\n<p>In a circular, CBN Acting Director, Financial Policy &amp; Regulation Department,\u00a0 John Onojah, explained that the revised charges will address increasing operational costs and enhance the efficiency of banking services.<\/p>\n<p>Under the new rules, customers withdrawing from their own bank\u2019s ATMs (on-us transactions) will continue to enjoy free withdrawals.<\/p>\n<p>However, withdrawals from on-site ATMs (ATMs located at bank branches) will incur an N100 fee per N20,000 withdrawn.<\/p>\n<p>For withdrawals at ATMs belonging to other banks (Not-on-Us transactions), an N100 fee plus a surcharge of not more than N500 per N20,000 withdrawal will apply.<\/p>\n<p>The CBN emphasized that the surcharge is the income of the \u201cATM deployer\/acquirer and must be disclosed to consumers at the point of withdrawal.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-container\">\n<p>According to the CBN, the updated fees are in line with Section 10.7 of the \u2018CBN Guide to Charges by Banks, Other Financial and Non-Bank Financial Institutions (2020).\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The statement reads, \u201cIn response to rising costs and the need to improve the efficiency of Automated Teller Machine (ATM) services in the banking industry, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has reviewed the ATM transaction fees prescribed in Section 10.7 of the extant CBN Guide to Charges by Banks, Other Financial and Non-Bank Financial Institutions, 2020 (the Guide).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis review is expected to accelerate the deployment of ATMs and ensure that appropriate charges are applied by financial institutions to consumers of the service,\u201d the CBN added.<\/p>\n<p>For international withdrawals using debit or credit cards, banks, and financial institutions are now allowed to charge a \u201ccost-recovery charge equivalent to the exact amount charged by the international acquirer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the CBN stated that the three free monthly withdrawals for Remote-On-Us (other bank\u2019s customers\/Not-On-Us consumers) will no longer apply under Section 10.6.2 of the Guide.<\/p>\n<p><span>The apex bank has urged all financial institutions to ensure compliance with the new guidelines before the March 1, implementation date.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The\u00a0Central Bank of Nigeria\u00a0(CBN) has reviewed upwards the fees charged on Automated Teller Machine (ATM) withdrawals effective March 1.
